Breathwork

Pranayama and modern breathwork: techniques, science and the path to facilitation.

Breathwork Guides: Technique, Science, and Facilitation

You breathe roughly 20,000 times a day, and most of those breaths happen without you noticing. These breathwork guides are about the ones you do on purpose: the classical pranayama practices of hatha yoga, the modern conscious-breathing methods that grew out of them, and the physiology that explains why a change in breathing changes how you feel. Everything here is written by a teacher, not a marketer, and every claim about the body is one we can stand behind.

Who this section is for

Two kinds of readers land here. The first is a practitioner who wants to understand what pranayama actually is, how a technique like kapalabhati works, and where the boundaries sit between traditional yogic breathing and the newer breathwork schools. The second is a yoga teacher or wellness professional weighing up a facilitator certification and trying to tell the serious programmes from the weekend ones.

Both groups need the same foundation. Technique without physiology leads to overclaiming; physiology without technique leads to nothing you can teach. The guides are ordered so that you build one on the other.

How the breathwork guides fit together

Start with what pranayama is and how it sits inside the eight limbs, then read the comparison between pranayama and breathwork so the vocabulary is clear before you go further. From there, the kapalabhati guide gives you one technique in full detail: mechanics, contraindications, and how to practise it safely. The books list is for going deeper on your own time.

The last two guides turn to facilitation. One explains what breathwork does for the people you would be working with and what a facilitator training should contain. The other is our roundup of ten certifications, with hours, price, and format compared honestly, including ours.
