Manipura Chakra: The Complete Guide to the Solar Plexus Chakra
Confidence. The ability to make a decision and follow through on it. A gut that you actually trust. These qualities live in Manipura, the Solar Plexus Chakra. It sits in the upper abdomen between the navel and the sternum and governs personal power, self-esteem, willpower, and the inner fire that turns intention into action. When Manipura is healthy, you show up in the world with clarity and ease.
This guide covers everything: Sanskrit roots, anatomy, what balance and imbalance look like, a full yoga sequence, breathwork, mantra, crystals, oils, foods, affirmations, and answered FAQs.

Sanskrit Etymology and Symbolism
Manipura means City of Jewels. Mani means jewel and pura means city. The name points to the radiance of this centre when it is activated: your personal power, inner clarity, and sense of purpose shine outward like light through a gem.
The ten-petalled yellow lotus contains a downward-pointing red triangle, the fire yantra, at its centre. The presiding deity is Rudra, a fierce form of Shiva, representing the capacity to burn away ego and purify what no longer serves you.
Location and Anatomy
Manipura sits at the coeliac plexus, a dense web of nerves behind the stomach and in front of the aorta. This network is so extensive that it is sometimes called the abdominal brain. It is the physiological home of what most people call a gut feeling.
The primary associated gland is the pancreas, which regulates blood sugar through insulin and glucagon. The adrenal cortex is also linked here. Organs under this chakra’s governance include the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, and small intestine. This is why persistent low self-worth so often shows up as chronic digestive trouble.

- Clear, decisive thinking and the confidence to act on it
- Healthy self-esteem that does not depend on external validation
- Strong willpower and the ability to follow through on commitments
- Firm, respectful boundaries with people and situations
- Good digestion and consistent physical energy
- Natural leadership without needing to dominate
Signs of an Imbalanced Solar Plexus Chakra
Physical
- Chronic indigestion, acid reflux, or stomach ulcers
- Blood sugar irregularities
- Fatigue and low metabolic energy
- Core muscle weakness
- Liver or gallbladder issues
Psychological and Emotional
- Low self-esteem, self-doubt, or persistent people-pleasing
- Indecisiveness and paralysis when making choices
- Chronic shame, the feeling of not being good enough
- Explosive anger or a need to dominate (over-active)
- Powerlessness or a victim mentality
Common Causes of Imbalance
Childhood environments where you were shamed, ridiculed, or controlled leave a direct mark on Manipura. So does growing up with an authoritarian parent or in a setting where your sense of agency was consistently undermined. In adulthood, perfectionism, chronic overwork, and burnout deplete the fire element over time.
Yoga Poses for the Solar Plexus Chakra
Core-strengthening and twisting poses are the most direct tools for Manipura. Move with intention and inner focus throughout.
1. Navasana -- Boat Pose
Sit with your knees bent and lean back slightly until the spine is at 45 degrees. Lift your feet so your shins are parallel to the floor. Extend your arms alongside your legs. Hold for five breaths, release, and repeat three times. This directly activates the core and the seat of Manipura.
2. Parivrtta Trikonasana -- Revolved Triangle
From a wide-legged stance, place the left hand to the right foot or shin and twist the right arm skyward. Twists wring out the abdominal organs and stimulate the digestive fire at the solar plexus.
3. Virabhadrasana III -- Warrior III
From standing, hinge at the hips and extend one leg behind you until the body forms a T shape with both arms reaching forward. This pose demands core engagement and concentration, two qualities of a healthy Manipura.
4. Dhanurasana -- Bow Pose
Lie on your stomach, bend your knees and reach back to hold your ankles. On an inhale, kick your feet into your hands and lift the chest. The entire front body opens, including the seat of Manipura.
5. Ardha Matsyendrasana -- Seated Twist
Sit with legs extended. Bend the right knee and cross it over the left leg, placing the foot flat beside the left knee. Wrap the left arm around the right knee and twist to the right. Twists massage the pancreas, liver, and coeliac plexus directly.
6. Kapalabhati then Savasana
Finish with a round of Kapalabhati (see below), then rest in Savasana. Visualise a radiant yellow sun expanding at the solar plexus with each breath.
Pranayama: Kapalabhati
Kapalabhati, or skull-shining breath, is the primary breathwork for Manipura. Start with a passive inhale, then pump the navel sharply inward on each exhale, allowing the inhale to follow automatically. Begin at one pump per second for thirty to sixty rounds. This generates heat, clears stagnant energy from the abdominal organs, and builds core strength. Avoid this practice during pregnancy, with high blood pressure, or if you have a hernia.
Go deeper with breathwork. Loka’s Online Breathwork Training takes you through the full spectrum of pranayama — from grounding and calming techniques to energising practices that build heat and focus. Self-paced and accessible from anywhere.
Mantra and Meditation
The bija mantra for Manipura is RAM, pronounced “rum” with a rolling R. It carries the frequency of fire and radiates outward from the solar plexus.
Sit tall and place both hands on the solar plexus. Visualise a bright yellow sun spinning behind your navel. On each exhale, chant RAM and feel the sound fan your inner flame. You can also work with the affirmation: I am powerful. I am worthy. I am enough. A 528 Hz sound bath supports this practice.

Crystals for the Solar Plexus Chakra
Citrine
Bright, expansive, and confidence-boosting. Citrine dissolves self-doubt and supports the momentum needed to pursue your goals. Keep it on your desk or carry it during conversations that require you to speak up.
Tiger’s Eye
Focused, disciplined, and grounding. This stone helps you see clearly through confusion and take decisive action. It is particularly useful when you are stuck in indecision or self-sabotage.
Yellow Jasper
Sustains energy, protects against external negativity, and builds self-esteem at a steady pace. Less intense than citrine, it provides a slow-burning warmth that suits chronic low self-worth well.
Pyrite
Stimulates confidence, ambition, and the will to succeed. Its metallic gleam reflects the shining city of Manipura’s name. Use it when you need a direct boost to motivation and self-belief.
Essential Oils for the Solar Plexus Chakra
- Lemon — cleansing and clarifying; diffuse during work or study to sharpen focus
- Ginger — warming and digestive; apply diluted to the abdomen to stimulate the digestive fire
- Juniper Berry — purifying and empowering; clears energetic and emotional heaviness
- Black Pepper — stimulating and grounding; supports willpower and clears mental fog
Foods for the Solar Plexus Chakra
Yellow and golden foods nourish Manipura. Bananas, lemons, yellow capsicum, corn, turmeric, ginger, chamomile tea, and fennel all support this chakra. Fermented foods like yoghurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut support gut health and the gut-brain axis that sits at the physical heart of this centre. Complex carbohydrates provide sustained fuel for the fire element.
Solar Plexus Affirmations

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the connection between gut feelings and this chakra?
The gut contains over 100 million neurons, more than the spinal cord, and communicates constantly with the brain via the vagus nerve. The solar plexus nerve complex is the physiological hub of this gut-brain connection. The intuitive pull you feel when something is right or wrong is, from an energetic perspective, the voice of Manipura.
How do I build willpower through this chakra?
Willpower grows with consistent practice, not through force. Daily Kapalabhati, core-focused yoga, and small acts of self-discipline, like keeping promises to yourself, all strengthen this chakra’s fire over time. Think of it as a muscle. Use it regularly and it develops.

Can Solar Plexus imbalance affect digestion?
Yes, directly. Chronic stress and shame activate the sympathetic nervous system, which reduces blood flow to the digestive system and lowers enzyme production. This is a contributing factor in conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and acid reflux. Clinical research consistently shows that yoga, breathwork, and stress reduction practices improve these symptoms.
